The Long Term Effects of Parenting:
"Can we Survive
Intact?"
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Mary Ellen Seery
Parent Power! What is it? How do we get it and use it? Can we effect
more change as individuals or as part of a group? Dr. Mary Ellen Seery
will explore issues of connectedness that are critical to the
achievement of effective power in our society. She will consider how
achieving connectedness is even more imperative for families who
have a member with a significant disability. Since 1975, and the passing
of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (today’s IDEA), we
have accomplished more connectedness as well as more isolation.
Why is that? This imbalance between the greater need for connectedness
and the reality of experiences of isolation will be explored. How
does this disparity affect a family’s ability to accomplish necessary
stages of development? Finally, Dr. Seery will explore pathways to
enhancing connectedness within, between and among vital societal
systems. Dr. Seery will allow time to entertain questions and audience
participation in discussion of the issues presented.
